Wow.
If there is a film that could spur a revolution of positivity in this world, this is it.
Directed by and Starring Tom Shadyac (the Director of The Nutty Professor, Ace Ventura, Bruce Almighty to name a few), I Am is a film about the undeniable fact that all life is connected. I laughed, I cried and I was overcome with joy throughout the film.
Some would call this a New Age, Hippy, Liberal film., however, the scientific studies, research and evidence behind everything presented were overwhelming. I think with anything you come across, you must seek out the truth. If you are skeptical of anything you find, research it=find out for yourself. I definitely plan to take the information that was presented in the film and continue to explore it. It certainly is a fascinating place to start.
One of the neatest parts of the documentary was where they connected electrodes to yogurt in a petri dish that measured (what appeared to be) the stress levels of the bacteria in the yogurt. When Tom Shadyac was talking or thinking about a stressful or negative situation or person, the meter indicated major stress levels by the "yogurt". Other than being heartily entertaining, it was designed to show that emotional states of living things affect the emotional states of other, seemingly unconnected living things. And this makes sense-think about a time where someone around you has been tense: you probably felt it too! Or think about a time where you walked into a room where a stressful situation was happening-the old saying, "You could cut the tension with a knife": it's true and scientifically proven.
The only reason I did not give this film 5 stars is a little selfishness on my part. Although the film discussed empathy and the innate need for humans to be connected and supportive of other living things, it did not go into very much detail into why so many people ignore these innate callings. One of my favorite things about the film was how overall positive the message was, so I can assume that this was one of the reasons the film did not delve into the reasoning behind people turning their backs on others. Even so, there are plenty of documentaries out there that discuss the failings of humanity without bringing enough light to the positive side-and this film did that.
You can find I Am on Netflix and I deeply hope you take the time to watch it and share with others.
I will leave you with a quote from the film:
"The sea is really only drops of water that have come together."
-Desmond Tutu
Bottom Line:
★★★★½
Love it!
